Excerpt: Aside from the risk that one can have from connecting a home computer to the internet, there is what we call physical risk which often leads to a more serious problem. The following are some of the examples of physical risks that one could encounter when it comes to home computers. The number one physical risk that one should take note of is power failure. Power failure may cause hardware problems especially with the hard disk drive. To protect your home computer against the harmful effects of power failure, you either have to use a UPS (uninterrupted power supply) or a surge protector. But it is best to use combination of both. The next thing is disk failure. Once the hard drive is no longer accessible, the entire operation is affected since the hard drive contains all the necessary files in running the system. In addition, all the files saved on the hard drive such as photos, music, movies, videos, and documents can no longer be retrieved so if in case you do not have a backup, you may not be able to see those files again. With this reason, creating a backup of all of your important files is a must. The internet is a good place where to store your important files but do not forget to password-protect your sensitive data to avoid unauthorized access. Lastly, physical theft should not also be taken for granted. Ensure that the computer is located in a place where it is safe….
